Freemasonry is a system of allegory and symbol arranged in peculiar fashion to convey a unique message. Some condemn Freemasonry by saying is a religion, when it does act to bring a tradition forward like a religion, but in fact practices no particular faith. The uniting idea is a faith in the divine founded in the certitude in something greater than the self.

A Freemason is a man who, in searching for life’s ineffable questions, finds his way into the company of fellow seekers. Comprised of men from every nation, races, social and economic level, all hold similar ideals and beliefs. The uniting idea is a faith in the divine founded in the certitude in an afterlife. This “belief” is grounded by certain landmark tenants and virtues which ultimately lead in exploration of those invisible questions, and when taught openly and learned in earnest by the initiates, can lead ultimately to the betterment of all mankind.

If this description seems out of place in the cynical world of today, let us remember that “Man does not live by bread alone.”

@ Wisa:

Golden Dawn membership, Regardie says, used to have been restricted to Masons of good standing. And the order was founded by 3 Freemasons. So there was clearly a lot of influence from one, put into the other. However, Regardie does not speak of any practices or secrets specifically pertaining to Freemasonry.

But, I would argue that essence of the Golden Dawns teachings essentially pertain to Freemasonry - but only in regards to the true & hidden nature of the order, its doctrine, and its practices. Ex. Kundalini, Hermetic Inner Alchemy etc, basically the the hidden nature of the 'temple building' practices in general. Many Masons would disagree with this. But, many Masons- for example, George H. Steinmetz- would argue that the true secret doctorine of freemasonry is lost and is no longer a living tradition among many lodges.

I would imagine that this was one of the reasons for  the Golden Dawn's establishment in the first place - that these 3 freemasons wanted to create their own order which could carry the essence of the secret doctrine, to keep it alive.

And yes, Manly P. Hall is an excellent author & scholar. His 'Lost Keys of Freemasonry' is written from the perspective of a teacher, directed at Freemason's who are interested in the Secret Doctrine - it comes off a bit preachy at times - suggesting that many of the lodges at the time were dead, and that he was aware of this. Especially considering he wasn't even physically initiated at the time of his writing the book.

Many years ago in the 1980's I bought a large hard bound copy of Manny Hall's 'Secret Teaching of The Ages. I also had the softcover copy which fell apart in use so I bought two of those. The hard cover had beautiful pictures and symbol as well  as the  background of many different groups. I paid $150 then and there was one more large edition which was about $300 with exception quality picture and bindings.

Manny Hall was basically an Historian of the esoteric although most designate him as an Adept or  teacher. Want info? Read that book as a starter. Might take a whild!

Does Israel Regardie's Book 'The Golden Dawn' give away the practices of Free Masonary?

Toby M. You are right. All those lodges that were formed on the basis of social and economic and political benefits couldn't possibly be the 'real thing. I do believe that there must be quiet, not known lodges that are.

In the early days of 'knowing' almost all the civilized people were initiated in and given secret passwords and congratulated. None of these, although ignorantly happy with their accomplishment, had any idea that they didn't really know the secrets.

Those who did know, went on their way silently and secretly working for the benefit of all mankind.

The American constitution was written mostly by Freemasons and bound by benefits of Freemason secret knowledge. There are  books written explaining some of the symbols associated with their writings and laws.

That includes the controversial saying now in controversy,'In God we Trust".

Hello Terrell and J.S., Welcome. Really not too much going on here, as you can see. Of those among us who are Freemasons, I can not tell. I am and have been for about five years, though my knowledge and understanding of Masonry extends beyond that considerably. If there are questions you may have, I would be happy to try to answer them for you, or at least direct you to further Light elsewhere.

I try to respect Freemasonry but see that so many modern fools in Politics are claimed to be members in it, its very confusing and hard to stamp a solid opinion or conclusion on something such as this , something we have to resort to assumptions with, since its practices are kept secret.

Toby, this is so true. Most of these organizations today are business and social groups making important contacts and problally not knowing the true meaning of the rituals they do. If what they do  is authentic!

Us not knowing what they do or all the rituals either can't understand.

Many of the writers of the US. Constitution were true Freemasons. What they wrote into it included protections for the Nation.

Waite wrote " A New Encyclopaedia of Freemasonry" two volumes in one.

Lots of information. There were some little soft cover books i.e on The Meaning of the letter G. in the writings of these men. Never lend out your books. I did this one and never got it back. Can't remember who I lent it to or exactly all the interesting facts that  it stated. I'm rambling. Forgive me.
