Here we go! The goal of this series is to provide a solid traditional background of the Art & Science of Astrology. This is a vast concept so please be patient. It can be plenty of fun if you are open-minded and don’t panic!

☤Tris☤

I therefore kindly ask you to hold your questions and comments until prompted by the host for discussion in tonight lessons.

Let’s start with a little history. Astrology was conceived by the Babylonians in the Fifth Century BC. It was the Babylonians who invented the 360  wheel and who also devised a “fixed” or “sidereal” zodiac of twelve 30 degree signs.

They constructed a star catalogue which enabled them to reduce several centuries of observations into step by step tables of motion for the Sun, Moon and planets.

With this information they were able to postulate significant positions of the celestial bodies in signs of the zodiac. They observed celestial circumstances of the eclipses of the Sun and Moon.

The Egyptians actually had no astrology but rather a devised ring of 36 asterisms (stars) that later became known as decans.

These were mainly used to tell time at night, and since they had individual names, they were considered to be either “lucky” or “unlucky.”

At some point it occurred to them that an “asterism” on the eastern horizon at the time a child was born gave an indication of whether its life would be lucky or unlucky.

In the second century B.B. in Alexandria, Egypt, the population was a mix of Egyptians, Jews and Greeks.

The amalgam known as horoscopic astrology is the combined astrological ideas of the Babylonians that were known to the Jews, the Egyptian assessment of luck from the rising asterism and the Greek philosophical and religious concepts.

Hence forth they wrote treatises defining the rules of the new art and they prepared a set of astronomical tables referred to a fixed zodiac.

These treatises were issued under the names of Nechepso, Petosiris, Hermes, Abram and Aseculapius. None of these works have come down to us intact but only in partial citations by later astrologers.

However, from the outset, Greek was the principal language of astrology which is why the Greeks are credited with personalizing astrology. The word HOROSCOPE comes from the Greek meaning “hour pointer”.

Is everyone keeping up OK?

Shall we continue?

Sylvester PERRETT

Yes

Skywriter

OK- When you get on the NET and visit your fav astro-site and acquire a free horoscope wheel and delineation you’re only getting part of the picture.

On line scopes leave quite a bit out because they only focus on computer generated astro-script of planets in signs and houses with aspects.

In order to fully understand the Self, the whole map and everything in it must be considered.

Many people study natal astrology not necessarily because they want to become astrologers but because they are seeking a more unique perspective about themselves, their friends and loved ones.

Individuals who are studying other esoteric modalities that require interpretation often find that a basic understanding of astrology helps bring more depth to their other studies.

Ok now put on your brain caps folks!

Western astrology encompasses a wide range of techniques but, the three main branches of astrology are MUNDANE, INTERROGATORY and NATAL.

Mundane is the astrology of world events.

Interrogatory astrology is concerned with events and their connection to the past, present and future i.e.: Horary – “Will this happen?”

Electional - “When is the best time to make this happen?”; Event - “What happened?” Natal is the study of individuality.

A Nativity, Natus or Natal Chart has been likened to a snapshot of the Heavens at the moment an individual is born. It is a map of potential.

From the “Nativity” an astrologer can glean information regarding an individual’s talents, abilities, habits, hopes, and fears.

A natal chart can show us how to grow and evolve and offers an explanation of the myriad ways we experience and use the energies in our charts to do so according to our own free will.

There is no limitation in a Nativity-the only way anyone is limited is by the choices they make according to that free will. An individual natal chart cannot be duplicated within less than twenty-five thousand years.

Astrology works because we are all part of the Universe and the same force that moves the planets also moves us. We all follow the same cycles and patterns.

Astrology is based on three foundations:

The Law of Correspondences This law states: As above, so below. As within, so without. As the Universe, so the Soul.

The Law of Alchemy This law states that all the energies are inside of us. If we deny them or suppress them, they will manifest outside of us.

neps

good point

Skywriter

This law is about any lessons we don’t approach on a conscious level and how they will manifest externally as forces that are difficult to ignore.

This law forces us to take personal responsibility for our actions and spiritual dignity. Since Western astrology is based on the premise of free will, with this law, we can choose where to experience life lessons but that we cannot escape those challenges.

The Law of Beginnings This law states that the beginning point of life contains the potential that will be fulfilled during the life cycle and beyond.

Our chat discussion will be on natal interpretation.

Natal interpretation is the study of human life, birth, childhood, relationships during the course of life, self image and projected image, feelings, thought patterns, beliefs, and all of the energies any individual generates around him or her Self and the cause and effect of those energies.

Esoteric astrologers believe that each individual choose their particular Nativity before reincarnating into a lifetime just as they actually choose their parents and even their name.

Any questions on this section?

steve

the law of beginnings reminds me of the law of cause and effect

Skywriter

Yes sir.

Any other queries or thoughts?

Sylvester PERRETT

It all sounds kabbalistic to me

Adam Heatley

Adam Heatley

Skywriter

Good Adam

Shall we continue?

Adam Heatley

yeah please

Skywriter

OK - Astrology uses a geocentric view. This is an Earth centered view. In others words, we view the heavens from our station on Earth.

From this position we see the Sun as revolving around the earth. In reality, we know that this is not true of course and that the vantage point is really heliocentric where the earth and the other planets orbit the Sun

But, for the purposes of astrology, we are asked to view the heavens just as our ancient predecessors did from the earthly vantage point. So, bearing this concept in mind, the path of the Sun’s circle around the earth is known as the ecliptic.

It takes the Sun one year to make a complete circle around the earth. The narrow band of the Sun’s path is known as the Zodiac.

Within the belt lies all the planets in our solar system with the exception of Pluto due to its unusually wide path AND the stars which make up the constellations.

To the ancient observers, the stars made patterns that looked like animals so the belt became known as the Zodiac which comes from the Greek “zoidiakos kylos” meaning circle of animals.

steve

is the wobble or tilt of the earth taken into account?

Skywriter

No Steve

But astrologers do consider Moon Wobbles

steve

OK

Skywriter

That's a story for another day!

Shall we continue? Does everyone understand the diagrams?

Sobroquet

please proceede

steve

please yes

Skywriter

So where to start? Basically an astrological chart is comprised of four basic components: PLANETS, SIGNS HOUSES and ASPECTS.

☤Tris☤

yes thank you

ॐBlessedॐ

yeah great visuals!

Skywriter

The planets are the Sun and Moon also known as the “lights”, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Astrologers do not care that Pluto has been demoted to dwarf planet status. Aspects are the geometrical angles that the planets can make to one another or other points such as asteroids is an astrologer has chosen to include them.

The twelve signs of the Zodiac are in order of precession: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

In reality is important to note that there are actually two Zodiacs. The Zodiac signs of astrology do not correspond to the constellations of the same name in astronomy although they both share some common mythological references.

The horoscope is depicted as a wheel which is divided into 360 degrees. It is then divided again into twelve sections. These sections are known as Houses and are marked by “cusps”.

The houses are calculated via whatever mathematical house system the astrologer is using. Most commonly this is either the Placidus or Koch system.

Net sites tend mainly to use Placidus but if you talk to a pro they might lean towards the Koch system which is believed to be mathematically superior.

The entire degrees and minutes of each house is set by the starting calculation of the Ascendant or rising sign. The houses work in polarity: 1 & 7; 2 & 8; 3 & 9; 4 & 10; 5 & 11; 6 & 12.

If you have a calculated chart you’ll notice that each of these sets will carry the same degrees and minutes. Each house has specific meanings and there are plenty of them. Here are the “general rule of thumb meanings:

1.SELF/Identity/Personality & Projection/Personal Action. 2. Resources/Earnings/Self Worth/Values 3. Communications/Daily Travel/Siblings/Immediate Environment/Early Schooling. 4. Home/Family/Roots/Inner Sanctorium.

5. Creativity, Will/Fun & Recreation/Romance/Procreation. 6. Work/Health/Pets/Skill/Service. 7. Others/Relationships/Opponents/Public. 8. Death/Sex & Intimacy/Joint Holdings/Investments.

9. Expansion/Beliefs/Foreign Travel/Law. 10. Reputation/Career/Authorities. 11. Aspirations & Hopes/Friends/Associates/Groups & Clubs & Organizations. 12. The Unconscious/Dreams/Seclusions/The Afterlife.

two questions: why is Aries always first? secondly : Uranus was discovered in 1781. Neptune in 1846 and Pluto in 1930, astrology is much older than these discovery dates - in the olden days, did they use 5 planets or ?

☤Tris☤

`yes thank you

Boadicea

ofcourse glad to have you around

Skywriter

You'll have to start thinking harder now ..

When a chart is cast according to specific birth date these signs will appear on the cusps of Houses that they do not naturally rule. So, the “meanings” of the House become colored or influenced by the signs that occupy the cusps.

Simica

evenin

Skywriter

Each House is defined and separated from the other houses by a mathematically calculated degree and a sign of the Zodiac. The planets which are the most important facet of astrology will occupy certain signs at birth and according to their degree and minute of the occupied will be posited in a House

Welcome Sim

steve

in middle of a lesson sim

Skywriter

Now since there are twelve Houses and only 10 planets there will always be Houses that are unoccupied. These are known as VOID HOUSES.

Simica

ah i will shut up then

☤Tris☤

welcome

Skywriter

Many astrologers believe that these empty houses represent areas where an individual doesn’t need to put as much life focus as opposed to the houses that carry planets.

neps

what were cusps again?

Skywriter

The cusps demarcate the Houses Neps

Sobroquet

hmmm

steve

edges of the house

Skywriter

Here is a link to one of our Astrology Group pages where you can find full basic info about meanings of the Houses AFTER chat is over so either bookmark it or save it: http://www.esotericonline.net/group/astrology/page/zodiac-builders-inc

neps

im lost at the cusps but continue

Sobroquet

So "void" has the opposite meaning in this case

Skywriter

OK Neps the cusps are the degrees on each House

neps

their position related to other houses?

in degrees?

Skywriter

Not necessarily opposite - just doesn't need as much work

steve

lets wait til question period perhaps

Sobroquet

IC- it doesn't mean empty

Skywriter

That's OK

neps

im the only one thats lost at the cusps?

Skywriter

They are literally empty of planets

The circle is divided into twelve parts right

neps

and each house is 30 deg

Skywriter

Only in an equal chart

neps

mhm

Skywriter

In a calculated chart some have more and some less

BUT it all adds up to 360

ॐBlessedॐ

interesting...

Skywriter

OK continue good people?

SammiG

k

Skywriter

Hi Sammi!

SammiG

hello

steve

keep er goin :-)

Skywriter

As a side note, as I mentioned earlier, these House meanings are the “basic meanings.” The 4th, 8th and 12th Houses are also known as the Occult Houses. These are the areas where one can find info re the Nether Regions, life after death, the astral worlds, psychism etc.

Another example is the 6th House which is the House of magic of all kinds, black, white and indifferent. The 9th House is the house of psychic receptivity. This gives you an idea of how diversified astrology is and how everything that exists is covered.

The first thing a pro astrologer will look at is the chart distribution of the planets known as “weight.” An important thing to note with this geocentric view is that the directions are opposite of the norm.

The bottom half of the chart which we would normally considered SOUTH is called the Northern Hemisphere; the upper half which we normally consider NORTH is the Southern Hemisphere.

SammiG

awesome

Skywriter

The RIGHT hand side of the map is the Western Hemisphere and the LEFT side of the map is considered the Eastern Hemisphere.

ॐBlessedॐ

why is that

Skywriter

Because of our geocentric view B

Each one of these hemispheres will say something about you by planetary weight. If you can count you can figure this all out easily. As most of you know, a natal map is divided into twelve sections numbered accordingly.

The 1st house starts on the Eastern horizon on the left hand side of the chart. This is also known as the ASCENDANT or Rising Sign.

The Northern Hemisphere of a chart includes houses 1-6 at the bottom half of the chart. Planets here are considered somewhat hidden or private and indicate the introvert who is pulled back about sharing personal information.

Skywriter

OK to continue now?

The Southern Hemisphere includes houses 7-12 at the top half of the chart. Planets here indicate the extrovert who likes to be seen and express the self more openly.

☤Tris☤

yes continue, thanks you

Skywriter

If the planets are evenly divided in these hemispheres it indicates a balanced nature unless planetary placement and aspects tip that balance.

steve

http://www.esotericonline.net/group/astrology/page/esotericonline-a... remember these visuals help a lot

Mardi

are you in that house Skywriter?

I mean 7 - 12

Skywriter

I have a combo Mardi

The Eastern Hemisphere includes houses 1,2,3,10,11, and 12 at the left half of the chart. Planets here surround the Ascendant so it makes sense that the energy equates with focus on individual expression. The individual will tend to be more self reliant, self initiating and active.

Mardi

Oh I see

Skywriter

The Western Hemisphere includes houses 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. At the right half of the chart. Planets here surround the Descendant (opposite the Ascendant) so “others” become important. The individual will tend to be more receptive and considerate.

How are we doing?

Keif Symanowitz

Still with ya, Skywriter

Skywriter

Any queries/

Mardi

pk

ok

Skywriter

The next basic planetary weight consideration are the quadrants. Each quadrant combines the qualities of two hemispheres.

Quadrant 1 consisting of houses 1, 2, and 3 reflects an introverted with a self reliant nature. Quadrant 2 consisting of houses 4, 5, and 6 indicates one who is introverted and reactive.

Quadrant 3 consisting of houses 7, 8, and 9 indicates one who is extrovert and reactive. Quadrant 4 consisting of houses 10, 11, and 12 indicates one who is extrovert and self reliant.

Please go to the link and look at image # 4 http://www.esotericonline.net/group/astrology/page/esotericonline-a...

An astrologer will also look to see which CROSS you have incarnated upon by observing the signs on the Major Angles – House 1,4,7, and 10. The Crosses are deep inherent principles of Nature.

An astrologer will also look to see which CROSS you have incarnated upon by observing the signs on the Major Angles – House 1,4,7, and 10. The Crosses are deep inherent principles of Nature.

Sorry my computer froze!

The MUTABLE CROSS consisting of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces means a life laced with a series of impacts so the individual must learn to be adaptable. They are often easily influenced. There is also a good deal of duality such two jobs, two spouses, etc

The FIXED CROSS consisting of the signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius indicates a life of purging. These individuals are often tested and cleansed and their lives are quiescent for a long time and then there is a sudden eruption. This pattern repeats throughout life.

Boadicea

yesterday i was asking someone if we can find who we were after astrology map

Skywriter

The CARDINAL CROSS means you have the Cardinal signs Aries, Cancer Libra and Capricorn on the Angles. Esoterically speaking this is a lifetime of further attunement to God/Source and it is considered a life of initiation. Life is often active.

In the next lifetime BO?

An astrologer who specializes in reincarnation can do that

Daniel Silversun

cool

Skywriter

Sometimes the Crosses are “split” and the meanings are therefore combined.

Any questions?

Sobroquet

Sky- perhaps that's where the expression "my cross to bear' began

Skywriter

Exactly Sobro

Skywriter

Remember if you are lost there will be transcript

SammiG

awesome

Skywriter

Homework -hehe

One Eternal Flame

lol

Skywriter

Next, an astrologer will look at the weight of the signs. A count is made of how many planets there are in whatever signs they occupy.

Boadicea

not in the next time ...who we were ?

Skywriter

Let’s say a person has the following count of planets: Aries 1; Taurus 1; Gemini 2; Cancer 0; Leo 0; Virgo 2; Libra 1; Scorpio 0; Sagittarius 2; Capricorn 4; Aquarius 4; Pisces 0. This means the following signs have weight Capricorn and Aquarius.

Yes past life too Bo

This tells the astrologer that via the Capricorn weight the person can be disciplined, responsible, reliable, industrious, conscientious, practical, achieving and conversely pessimistic, overly conventional, rigid, materialistic, callous.

Via the Aquarius weight, humanitarian, innovative, group conscious, progressive, serving others and conversely be rebellious, eccentric, aloof, emotionally superficial, overly extroverted.

Where did all these adjectives come from? They are some of the general adjectives associated with these signs.

Often when a person takes an astrology course, the instructor will make them keep a notebook of adjectives describing each sign as they learn about them which are added to throughout the course

Any questions?

Keif Symanowitz

When you say count of planets, you refer to how many times each sign occurs in your natal chart, yes?

Sobroquet

aspects?

Skywriter

Keif count means you simply count the planets is a given house, hemisphere or quadrant, sign etc.

We'll get to aspects Sobra! Hold on

Sobroquet

ok

Skywriter

Continue?

Keif Symanowitz

Yep.

Skywriter

OK

Next, is the weight or lack of weight of the elements FIRE, EARTH, AIR, and WATER. Each sign falls into one of these categories.

FIRE element is connected to Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. These signs are animated and inspired.

Boadicea

i like this part

Skywriter

EARTH is connected to Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. These signs are practical and material.

Boadicea

Taurus =>earth this is me:-D

Skywriter

AIR is connected to Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. These signs are intellectual and communicative.

Boadicea

material:O

Skywriter

WATER is connected to Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These signs are emotional and psychic.

These groups are technically known as the TRIPLICITIES. Let’s say a person has this Elemental count: Fire 3; Earth 7; Air 7; Water 0. Earth and Air have a high count. Fire is in the middle and Water is zilch.

The Astrologer would tell that person the following: “You are a practical and efficient, hands-on person. and can be relied on to take a common-sense approach to most matters.

steve

no one is pure "100% taurus , right" i mean, we a mix of signs?

Skywriter

You are stubborn and often refuse to make changes in your life. You tend to stifle both your own and other people's enthusiasm (Earth strength).

No one is pure!

You tend to be philosophical, preferring to view life from an intellectual perspective. You have a high sense of fairness, and a logical thought process (Air strength).

Your weakness lies in the fact that you view emotions in a disparaging light. Crying or losing your cool in front of other people would be a horrifying thought, let alone action, for you. You need to learn to honor both your own and other people's feelings as you lack compassion (Water weakness).”

Everyone get the idea?

steve

yup, great!

Skywriter

Next are the modalities also called qualities. They are CARDINAL, FIXED and MUTABLE. Each one of these categories will contain 4 signs, one of each element.

☤Tris☤

yes thanks

Daniel Silversun

yes

Skywriter

Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. They are action oriented and forceful.

Boadicea

:)

Skywriter

Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. They are sensible and steadfast.

The Mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. They are changeable and adaptable.

This grouping is also known as the QUADRUPLICITIES.

I my astrology classes I have a joke about the Quadruplicities:

CARDINAL – “I WILL!” FIXED - “I WON’T!” MUTABLE – “WHO CARES?”

One Eternal Flame

lol

steve

nice

Skywriter

Go to link and view image # 5 http://www.esotericonline.net/group/astrology/page/esotericonline-a...

Let’s say a person has this count: Cardinal 0; Fixed 7; Mutable 10.

The astrologer might say: You may procrastinate. You expect others to be flexible, like yourself (Mutable strength).

You prefer to follow in other people's footsteps rather than initiate actions. You can be relied on to come up with the goods as long as someone else has the initial ideas. Your survival mechanisms are weak (Cardinal weakness).

Any questions?

Continue?

ॐBlessedॐ

yes

☤Tris☤

please

Skywriter

Many astrologers also like to calculate what is known as the SIGN SIGNATURE or Final Signature. This consists of planets in signs by element and quality count.

The Sign Signature meaning is added to the meaning of a person’s personality. Often it comes up the same sign as the Sun sign but sometimes it does not.

Let’s say a person is a Gemini Sun and he has the following planets in element count: Fire 1; Earth 5; Air 3, Water 0. We see Earth is clearly the winner.

Now let’s look at the count by modalities: Cardinal 1; Earth 5; Mutable 4. Mutable is clearly the winner. Next we put the combination together = Mutable Earth.

If we go back and review our date we see Capricorn is a Cardinal Earth sign; Taurus is a Fixed Earth sign and Virgo is Mutable Earth sign.

So this person’s Sign Signature is Virgo adding Virgoan qualities to the personality. A good example of this is the late Bill Gates.

He had a strong Scorpio influence in his chart including a Scorpio Sun but his Sign Signature was Leo. This accounts for his flair for publicity and his ability to commend center stage.

Next is HOUSE weight. Which houses have planets and how many planets are in those houses?

Let’s say the count is: 1st 0; 2nd 0; 3rd 2; 4th 0; 5th 5; 6th 6; 7th 2; 8th 1; 9th 1; 10th 0; 11th 0; 12th 0. The winners are the 5th and the 6th Houses.

The astrologer might say that life emphasis is on creative self expression, artistic pursuits, hobbies, recreation, procreation and lovers self-fulfillment and joy as well as: health, daily routine, working environment, skills, pets and animals and service to others.

Briefly, in regards to the Decantes. I was told by a teacher of mine that the Egyptian decans can be incorporated into the 12 Greek signs of 30 degrees, creating an additional 3 delineations within each sign. Leaving us with 36 signs of 10 degrees each. Any thoughts?

Skywriter

Skywriter - wonderful job in covering so beautifully so much material easily.

Respectfully, I have had several questions about Astrology concerning the Star Sirius and Earth I hope you can answer.

First I should say I debunked astrology until I studied it in earnest..thirty years ago. I do not consider myself an Astrologer so I am wondering if you can explain to me if you have thoughts on the subject why Sirius is not used as a factor in determining the horoscope and why the Earth is not used either. It seems as above (Sirius) so below (Earth) and then do the 12 planets as the typical horoscope has been done for many years.

Also, another million dollar question, if we live on Earth why is not our alignment with her at the time of our birth brought into consideration?

Since we live in a time of expansion energy is it time to do this - or has this already being done:

I have carried with me this information about Sirius from Alan Oken but I never found a reference why this was not used as a standard in also determining the horoscope:

From Alan Oken’s Complete Astrology, “As Above so Below, The Horoscope, The Road and Its Travelers, Astrology: Evolution and Revolution (1981 Bantam Books)

Coordinates to use to align your birth with that of the longitude of the Star Sirius

‘Longitude:  the longitude of Sirius in 1950 was 13      23’33”.

If the positions for another year are required just take the number of years between the date of birth and 1950.  Multiply this number by 50 1/3” and add the resultant number to the star’s longitudinal position if the birth occurred after 1950 or subtract the resultant sum of the birth occurred before 1950.

Examples: If your birth occurred in 1940, multiply 50 1/3” by 10 (years). This equals 50.3”.  Then divide by 60 to get the number of minutes and seconds of the arc, which is 8’23.”   Subtract this from:

13       23’33”  and you get:  13     15”10” the longitude for Sirius in 1940.

If the birth occurred in 1960, add 8”23 to 13      23’33” obtaining 13      31’56” as the correct position.

What do you think, Skywriter? Appreciate the feedback. I feel instinctively we should be factoring both Sirius and Earth into the Horoscope.  Thank you. SWAN.
