Dr. Marc Edmund Jones was a famous American astrologer who was a breakthrough pioneer and reformer in the field.

These patterns have unusual and perhaps to some, even comical names. They are SPLASH, SPLAY, BUNDLE, LOCOMOTIVE, BOWL, BUCKET, and SEESAW. These are actually fun to figure out and discern.

Not everyone has an overall pattern in his or her chart but if they do, more color seems to be added to the personality. Plus these patterns are active throughout an entire lifetime.

This makes them subject to effects from Transits, Progressions and Directions as the Apex or main planet of the pattern can be affected by the aspects produced by these movements.

Astrologer Robert Carl Jansky did further in depth research into Dr. Jones’ original material and later added an eighth personality type known as the FAN.

He and astrologer Marion March discussed a ninth pattern known as the WHEELBARROW and, after Jansky’s death in 1980, Ms. March and her students concluded that the pattern was indeed valid after further research and study.

These Patterns can only be produced by the planets and no other points or heavenly bodies. There is a visual page and each pattern has a visual and an actual celebrity so you can understand this concept

Bear in mind that the planets can appear in other houses than what is shown as long as long as the rules fit.

In the BOWL all planets lie to one side of the zodiac and occupy one half of (180) of the entire chart. The pattern is even more pronounced when the angles are involved (1-7; 4-10).

Ideally, the two planets that form the rim of the bowl are in opposition to each other. An individual with a BOWL pattern is usually very self contained, quite subjective, and often self satisfied.

There is often a feeling that there is a cause or mission that needs to be fulfilled.

The unoccupied portion of the chart becomes the challenge or the unknown quantity that needs to be understood in order for the individual to function properly.

BUCKET - This pattern looks like a bowl with a handle on it. It is the second most common pattern. All of the planets lie opposite a single planet on the other side of the chart.

This planet forms the handle and is known as the “singleton.” The singleton planet become all important in this pattern because it represents the outlet for all of the stored energy in the opposite or Bowl section.

The position of the singleton is important as well. If it stands straight up in relationship to the Bowl the individual knows what he or she wants and goes after it.

If it leans to the left, the individual knows what he or she wants but loses steam halfway in the process and therefore must try harder.

If it leans to the right, the individual might overdo and put in more effort than is necessary.

The positive manifestation of the BUCKET is one who can inspire and teach others while the negative manifestation indicates one who is an agitator.

The SEESAW pattern is sometimes also called the HOURGLASS. It is the most common of all the patterns. In this pattern, there are two groups of planets opposing one another.

Technically, this pattern should have a square of open space (90) on one side and more than a sextile (60) on the other side.

The individual needs to learn how to weigh and balance in life because they are often pulled in one direction then the other.

Unique achievement is possible if the individual understands and employs the polarity of this pattern positively. Negatively employed, the individual will constantly be in a state of conflict.

SPLASH: This pattern is often called the “Universal Citizen.” All ten planets are well divided around the Zodiac wheel.

The pattern is indicative of an individual who can do many things well and as one door closes another one opens.

Positively used, the pattern indicates one who can create order out of confusion and negatively used the individual will scatter his or her energies in all directions with little accomplishment.

BUNDLE: Some astrologers call this pattern the WEDGE. All ten planets are concentrated within the narrow confines of a trine (120) therefore, the focus is very one-sided.

Much can be made of very little with this pattern with unanticipated results.

The energy can be used positively to build upon small beginnings or negatively by trying to force limited views on others because of personal inhibition.

Some astrologers feel that when “focus” energy of the BUNDLE is positively used the individual can be a specialist in his/her chosen field.

The FAN is a result of the research done by astrologer Carl Jansky.

It is similar to the BUCKET pattern except that instead of a BOWL and a singleton (handle) there is a BUNDLE and a singleton (handle).

In the FAN pattern the singleton acts as “input” to the BUNDLE as if it were in the driver’s seat of the chart.

In essence, the singleton of the BUNDLE is the “cause” whereas in the BUCKET the singleton is the “effect.” The interpretation is opposite that of the BUCKET and the momentum generated is even greater.

In the LOCOMOTIVE pattern, all ten planets are placed within two-thirds of the chart leaving an empty trine (120) space.

There should also be no open space within the pattern that exceeds 65.

It is important to determine the “engine” or the planet leading the others in a clockwise direction of this pattern because it is the planet that will push the locomotive into action by leading or pulling the other planets along …

AND the “caboose” as these planets will reveal motivation. With this pattern, the individual can be self motivated and bring much power to bear to achieve.

Often he or she is ”moved” more by external factors that personal tendencies and have much practical capacity and can go far in life if abilities are used positively.

The SPLAY pattern is also known as the TRIPOD. This pattern has three distinct portions in a chart and if perfect, some of the planets within these portions form a Grand Trine.

This pattern has great momentum and can rarely be limited to one point of application.

The individual is provided with a strong platform from which to work while drawing on the harmonious energies created by the Grand Trine or three portions.

Some astrologers believe this pattern can reveal genius.

WHEELBARROW - Astrologer Marion March continued the research on this pattern. This pattern consists of a BUNDLE with two equi -distant handles or singletons on the opposite side.

The Astrological planets are: The Sun (the Great Light), Moon (the Lesser Light), Mercury, Venus, Mars Jupiter (The Greater Benefic), Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

The planetoid Chiron has taken on such significance over the years that it too is included in the Planetary Intelligentsia.

The planets also engage retrograde motion on a regular schedule EXCEPT the Sun and Moon. These two astrological planets NEVER go retrograde.

During retrogradation a planet APPEARS to be moving backward. This is scientifically impossible of course but Astrology takes the view of the Ancient Astrologer/Astronomers whereby they observed from the Earth- centered view that some of the “stars’ they watched cyclically “moved.”

In ancient times EVERYTHING in the Heavens was called a star. There were stars that did not move which were called FIXED STARS and stars that seemed to shuffle cyclically to and fro. These were called MOVING STARS and they eventually came to be known as PLANETS.

In ancient scripts, some of the planets are known as benefic or malefic. Benefic was associated with luck and spiritual bounty. Malefic was tied to harder life lessons. This does not mean they are “good” or “bad.”

A harshly aspected Venus or Jupiter can be troublesome AND conversely a favorably aspected Mars or Saturn can be helpful.

Each sign has a planetary ruler. There are only 10 planets and 12 signs, so Mercury and Venus rule two signs. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Venus rules Taurus and Libra.

Jupiter represents the desire for growth and expansion, freedom, faith and spirituality. Its expression is the expansion of consciousness, humor, philosophy, the higher mind and desire worldliness through experience and attained knowledge.

Its urge is to contribute to the larger order and to connect with something greater than the self. Its need is self improvement. Orbit every 12 years. Ruler of Sagittarius. Ancient ruler of Pisces.

Jupiter' glyph is the semicircle of the Moon rising above the Cross of matter. As a male planet, Jupiter is a representation of the solar force.

Saturn represents structure, responsibility and authority. Its expression is to make things tangible, set up boundaries and to give physical manifestation and form to ideas and concepts.

Its psychology includes perception of society and how we experience authority internally and externally and respond/react to it.

Its urge is to protect and limit when necessary and its need is for self reliance, self discipline and responsibility. Orbit 29 1/2 years. Ruler of Capricorn. Ancient ruler of AQUARIUS.

Saturn's glyph is composed of the same two symbols of Jupiter's glyph but they are inverted. The glyph is the cross imposed over the semicircle.

This glyph represents the principle of contraction which is the opposite of Jupiter's glyph which represents expansion. It also represents the Law of Limitation (conservation of matter and energy).

Uranus represents the unexpected and disruptive for good or ill including accidents and miracles. Within its energy is contained the process of spiritual awakening and that which transcends cause and effect.

Its expression is sudden, instantaneous, unconventional and chaotic. Its psychology includes sudden flashes of creative inspiration and the need for reevaluation which forces change.

Its urge is to change and disrupt without regard for feelings and its need is to exert ego-less unpredictable force. Orbit 84 years. Ruler of AQUARIUS.

The glyph for Uranus stands for the joining together of the soul of man (one semi-circle) with the Divine soul of infinite manifestation (the other semi-circle).

The two semi-circles rest on either side of the cross. This symbolizes the linking of the human with the Divine that leads to evolutionary growth. The small circle is the force of the energizing Spirit whose life flow makes it All possible

Neptune, in its uniquely oblique way, represents the truth that reality is an illusion. It also represents the ultimate potential for Universal creation and creativity. Its expression is to dissolve all boundaries and structures revealing that anything is possible.

Its psychology concerns the ability to fantasize and dream and connect with the incomprehensible and infinite potential of the Universe. Its urge is to reveal ultimate truth and its need is to merge with the One. Orbit 165 years. Ruler of PISCES.

Neptune is also a Higher Octave planet and is the higher vibration of Venus. The glyph for Neptune is a pictograph of the Trident held by the Lord of the Oceans.

Its urge is to heal, to transcend the physical and connect with the Universal. Its need is to carry the outer light to the physical body so the process of spiritual transformation can occur. Orbit 51 1/2 years. Chiron does not specifically rule a sign but it is thought to be strongly tied to Virgo

The glyph of Chiron is the letter O and the letter K standing for “Object Kowal” since it was a heavenly body discovered by astronomer Charles Kowal. The glyph resembles a “key” which is thought to open the door to higher consciousness and healing.

There are a set of conditions surrounding the planets know as ESENTIAL DIGNITIES. They are part of Classical Astrology and predate the discovery of the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto by almost two thousand years.

What has survived into modern Astrology are the terms DOMINION, DETRIMENT FALL, and EXALTATION. When a chart is cast the planets will all occupy the signs they were transiting at birth.

According to the degree of the sign in which they fall, the planets will also occupy the Houses. There are a few simple rules to follow to figure out the status of a planet.

When a planet is in DOMINION, it simply sits in the House that it rules. I.E. Sun/Leo; Cancer/Moon; Mercury/Gemini or Virgo; Venus/Taurus or Libra; Mars/Aries; Jupiter/Sagittarius; Saturn/Capricorn; Uranus/Aquarius; Neptune/Pisces; Pluto/Scorpio.

The planets are “at home” in these signs where it works with ease. When planets are in EXALTED they are in comfortable signs where they can be described as honored guests but they are also bound by certain standards for acceptable behavior.

EXALTED planets act on the spiritual/soul level which the Greeks called Nous.

The Sun is EXALTED in Aries; Moon in Taurus; Mercury in Aquarius; Venus in Pisces; Mars in Capricorn; Jupiter in Cancer; Saturn in Libra; Uranus in Scorpio; Neptune in Leo (some prefer Gemini) and Pluto in Pisces (some prefer Leo).

When a planet is in its Polarity Sign it is in DETRIMENT. They are not weakened but tend to exhibit their energies in inappropriate ways to their current situation. These planets operate on the mental/emotional plane.

A planet is in FALL when it occupies the sign that is opposite to its EXALTATION. When a planet is in this state it will operate with the least amount of strength. It is like they are stranded in a foreign country and have little influence.

Under this condition a planet operates on the physical plane.

The Sun is in FALL in Libra; Moon in Scorpio; Mercury in Pisces; Venus in Virgo; Mars in Cancer; Jupiter in Capricorn; Saturn in Aries; Uranus in Taurus; Neptune in Aquarius(or Sagittarius) and Pluto in Virgo (or Aquarius).

There is plenty of controversy about the dignities for Uranus, Neptune and Pluto since this concept originated with the planets that “could be seen by the naked eye.” Mercury tends to break the rules as well. I have listed the dignities that I use.

<In some cases, if you are considering the ancient rulerships of Mars for Scorpio and Jupiter for Pisces, when doing an Horary Chart, simply follow the rules listed.>

The planets are also subject to Accidental Dignity, Exaltation, Fall and Detriment according to house placement. House placement is more selective. Astrological opinion varies on this subject. You can check the illustration for these placements.

Another interesting planetary condition is known as MUTUAL RECEPTION. This involves two planets that are occupying each other’s signs. For example Venus in Aries and Mars in Libra or Taurus are in MUTUAL RECEPTION because they are in the signs each other rule.

This is considered a very beneficial and harmonious relationship between two planets. It is as though you can blend the energies indicated by each planet into one line of action.

The harmony of the two planets gives an overlay or additional help in bringing out the best each planet has to offer in whatever sign and house it may occupy and whatever aspects it makes. It is easier for the individual to use the most positive qualities possible within the boundaries of the horos

Not all charts have planets in mutual reception but it is important to take special note if they do. In observing a chart sometimes one planet stands out, perhaps it is elevated (in the 9th or 10th house) or because it makes or receives more aspects than any other planet which is known as high focus

A high focus planet is often involved in a chart configuration but this is not a prerequisite for high focus.

In my chart for example, Neptune is elevated in the 10th House of Career
