Seidr

Our modern worldview is different from that of the ancients but by structuring elements of the invisible components of perception it becomes clearer and to view the Edda objectively verifiable than the other; being mythical.

To understand, it must be dealt with by a combination of logic. Snorri Sturluson, was a Christian historian writing in the thirteenth century – many generations after the pre-Christian Norse religion had ceased to be a living tradition. Snorri consciously left out of his explanation poems and parts of poems that were simply too seething with paganism to be acceptable in his time, and that could, in any way, reveal the true spiritual depths of the pagan lore and thus be a threat to the Christian faith. The display of immortality and path of initiation offered by the goddess Freya in the Voluspá, a very important part of that poem, is also left out by Snorri.

In the Poetic Edda there are numerous stories about initiations and pagan rituals, but they are often easily disguised as legends and romances, and this is how Snorri explains them. He did this either because he was a devote Christian who happened to be fond of his literary heritage, or because he was wise enough to know how to conform with the Church authority in a time when heretics and pagans would be executed and their books burned. Thus paganism could still be considered a threat by an increasingly powerful Church. Snorri did his masterpiece, collecting and saving the mythical lore and making it harmless by presenting it as legends of the ancestors rather than stories of gods, practitioners and their rituals.

Seidr is a form of pre-Christian Norse magic and shamanism concerned with discerning and altering the course of destiny by re-weaving part of destiny's web. Typically one having a noose used for divination and soul travel to the realm of the dead. Altering the course of destiny by re-weaving part of destiny's web and being able to bring them back from the afterlife safely. They are able to change the future events that would have been complete death and no return for the hanged by showing good judgement in this magical skill.

Seidr was the ability to alter the fate of herself and others and the ultimate fate is death. The ability to master the fate of death. She would have to go under a ritual of initiation herself and prove she could control her own fate of death and then becoming her own fate Goddess. Upon her resurrection she received a new name and started a lifelong journey.

In a Seidr’s Sacred Marriage was a mock execution ritual by hanging and the NDE (near death experience) is well documented as as an after effect from from one. Many of the most powerful cult throughout time have used this ritual and why many cults still use this as a ritual of initiation today. The NDE is also well documented as having paranormal effects on a person afterwards and its even a shamans calling and Seidr is a form of pre-Christian Norse magic and shamanism.

Shamans are chosen by the spirits at birth, but it is not until later in life (usually in their 20’s) that the shaman is struck down. The striking down of a shaman is to dismember them as a person and to have them reborn into something else. There are two ways of being struck. The first is a near-death experience called shaman’s sickness and the second is lightning. It is the hallmark of the classic shaman in many parts of the globe. The phenomenon of shaman sickness is found in tribal cultures around the world, with remarkably similar sets of traumas. It is the hallmark of the classic shaman in many parts of the globe.

Seiðr is not a religious practice; it is a magical practice which is where some of its sinister reputation originates. The magic of Seiðr includes divination, soul travel, shape shifting, necromancy and cursing.

The High Priestess holds scrolls of arcane information in her arms. In addition, the moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see. A woman (or man!) of psychic powers, intuition and secret knowledge.  She may come across as cold, unpredictable and scary, but her instincts and insights will be uncanny.

The High Priestess, however, goes beyond even that for those who seek more. Behind her throne is the curtain that leads to the deepest, most esoteric knowledge; the pomegranates that decorate it remind us of Persephone, who was taken down into the land of the dead, ate its fruit and became the only goddess allowed to travel to and from that strange land. The High Priestess is our guide to all that is mysterious and mystical. The High Priestess not only offers illumination, revealing secret paths and hidden dangers, but also a still, quiet place between the pillars.

Of all the reconstructed systems of archaic magickal practice, Seiðr seems to be one of the most misunderstood. This is partly because of its sinister reputation, and partly because of sexist notions that only women ever practised divination. All…Continue
