Not sure where to find beeswax? Craft stores usually stock the stuff for use in candlemaking, etc. Look for United States Pharmaceutical (USP)grade, which means it has been filtered and purified without harsh chemicals.

Fitness regimens, when paired with drastically falling temps, usually lead to a major slacking off. Blame away — there are undoubtedly many seasonally-related fall guys to take the hit for this: darker evening hours, freezing morning daybreaks, heavier coats that so conveniently and effectively hide that extra paunch...

Whatever your excuse, don’t even think of pointing that slacker finger at your sore tris and glutes. Sure, chillier temps can freeze up muscles post-workout, but you can simplify the battle against aches with a homemade herbal rub. Mend your aching muscles, and you’ll not only have an excuse for someone special to lay their hands on you, you’ll also be back on the trail by tomorrow.

  1. Mix 1/2 oz of beeswax and 2 oz of coconut or EVOO in a small saucepan. Place saucepan inside a larger pan to create a double boiler effect. Add water to the bottom pan and heat the mixture over low heat, stirring until melted. Once melted through, remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Mix approximately 10 drops peppermint oil, 10 drops eucalyptus oil, and five drops clove oil into the beeswax and olive oil mixture thoroughly. Allow the heated mixture to cool for several more minutes.
  3. In a separate pot, boil roughly 1 tbsp herbs in 2 cups of water for several minutes until liquid is reduced by half.
  4. Strain the herbs from the infusion and add infused herbal water into the beeswax and olive oil mixture. Heat this mixture until the water has evaporated. Allow the mixture to cool for five minutes.
  5. Pour the oil mixture into a clean, medium-size glass or metal container. Let stand until completely cooled.
  6. Dip either your fingers or a small, clean cloth into the homemade salve and apply in circular motion to the aching part of the body. For a wrap effect, saturate a small cloth in the salve and wrap a wrist or ankle snugly. Hold in place with an elastic bandage or towel.
