"The magic 8 ball is really just a variation on a very old fortune telling technique called ball reading: The fortune teller racks the balls, then the questioner thoroughly mixes them while thinking of their question (some ball readers require that you keep the 8 ball in the center but generally it's accepted that any balls can go in the corners), then the questioner breaks following the normal rules for 8-ball. the fortune teller then reads the answer based on the position of the balls to each other and their positions on the table (however, if the questioner scratches on the break the meanings of the balls are inverted, and if the break is fouled the questioner must re-rack the balls and ask the question in a different way).
Ball readers were eventually forced underground when a Christian women's organization claimed that ball reading was a form of witchcraft. The remaining ball readers identified each other with their secret code, pairs of fuzzy dice (the 42 dots on the pair of dice corresponding to the 42 points of interpretation in ball reading), and congregated in seedy pool halls on the edge of town, but competition for tables forced a split in ball readers, and about half of them decided to stay underground and stick with the traditional methods while the other half devised the magic 8 ball as a way to practice a modernized version of ball reading in the privacy of their own homes... to this day the two groups can't get along and that's why you NEVER see a magic 8 ball on a pool table." - threeshadows
Long ago, in the past we can only guess about, some poor soul considered how his life had become utter shite, and screamed, Why ME??? His wife, looking for a way to get a break pointed out that she didn't have mind-reading capabilities, and told him to go ask someone who cared, and Man's spiritual search began. It is very important that we internalize that the spiritual paths all exist as a means for ordering our practical and material lives and answering the first basic question: Why ME?
Since that first question a long line of flim-flam men formed, touting religions, potions, card tricks, inside scoops, but the vast majority of these ignored the core question; the big one; Why ME? Only the historically shadowy Cult of the Orb sought to understand the illusion of a common destiny and the logos of Idioniscience and the Powers of Two.
Even through the Age of Enlightenment this small group of thinkers has remained marginalized while the icons of their movement became commonplace and even some of their chants became the basis for popular songs, and so forth. However, it is the case that this small group of thinkers were able, using the powers they gained from Eight Ball practices, to found, foster, and foment a mental process that is known to some as The Mentis, and is the underpinnings of the modern American mentality.
As life has become more and more complex the core question has remained stable, but Man's need for guidance has expanded. Hence, we have developed the psuedo-sciences of meteorology, psychology and economics, in the attempt to deal with the practical problems beyond self, and the need for Eight Ball logic is greater now, than ever.
The methods of the Eight Ball are simple. The ardent poses a simple question and the reader gives a simple answer that is then meditated on, by the questioner, prior to action being taken. In the absence of a reader, a Magic Eight Ball is used, but the method remains constant: Simple question; simple answer; plenty of interpretation. Why does it work?
The key to Eight Ball reading was found to be a neuro-chemical complex created in the mind of the questioner the moment the ball is viewed. The actual sight of the black orb, the white circle inscribed with the number eight in the center creates an immediate firing of the vagus nerve, that sends a strong electrical pulse straight through the hypothalmus, pituitary and adrenal glands, resulting in a strong hormonal stimulation to the center of the wheel of fortune in the frontal lobe of the brain. This impulse prepares the brain for truth. Simultaneously subsonic clicky noises are transmitted to the orb preparing the truth for entry. The secondary responses in the reader (when there is one) and the questioner result in prefrontal lubrication of the labial-cerebrum, as well as setting an autonominal mechanism that closes the mind, once the truth has entered it, allowing for optimal incubation of interpretive thoughts. In other words, it works, because it does.
If a questioner does not get the answer that he desires, continued efforts will not yield before the core question is asked. Therefore, it is vital that the first question be the core question: Why ME?
Remember: You can't ask the question if you don't know the answer.

Comment by Seagypsy on November 30, 2011 at 8:13pm My father brought me a magic 8 ball when I was about the same age. I absolutely loved it and carried it around with me for years. A good memory and possibly the start of my "seeking" :-)
