I heard this spoken today:
"Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see".
The comment sparked my attention, and this post.
It's Edgar Allen Poe, and note that these words were spoken by the "nominal head of the institution" in the mind of the author. Context...

This is interesting. First lets take the quote itself, not where/whom it came from.
"Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see".
The opposite could be observed in our current situation, believe everything you hear, and half of what you see (make up the rest).

While the original quote is wise advice, I would also like to point out what is not said in the quote.

So if you cannot believe what you hear/read and only half of what you see, then what's left?
If these are the only two senses you use to navigate this world, well then, you're fucked my friend.

Other senses must be employed then, and work must be done on the "noisy" ones stated in the quote.
Work on the "noisy" senses, not the content of what is perceived. Key point.

The world is both what we see/perceive and what we do.
