This discussion, like others, will be more of an instructional or lesson type chat, in which the host will be directing the conversation and appropriate times for questions or comments. I therefore kindly ask you to hold your questions and comments until prompted for discussion in tonight

The main goal of this is to be better organized with our discussions moving forward, so that everyone attending can get the maximum benefit from each discussion.

Tonights discussion covers the foundational aspects of Alchemy, like Astrology it is a vast subject, and will need to cover many lessons.

I would like to begin tonights discussion, by listing out the contents of the emerald tablet as its currently know, I will be providing the translation from Isaac Newton

many translations are indeed available, though very similar - I encourage everyone to research them a bit, and ponder each line and its implications

1. Tis true without lying, certain & most true.

2. That which is below is like that which is above & that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing.

3. And as all things have been & arose from one by the meditation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation.

4. The Sun is its father, the moon its mother,

5. The wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth its nurse.

6. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here.

7. Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth.

7a. Separate thou the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross sweetly with great industry.

8. It ascends from the earth to the heaven & again it descends to the earth and receives the force of things superior & inferior.

9. By this means you shall have the glory of the whole world & thereby all obscurity shall fly from you.

10. Its force is above all force, for it vanquishes every subtle thing & penetrates every solid thing.

11a. So was the world created.

12. From this are & do come admirable adaptations where of the means (or process) is here in this.

13. Hence I am called Hermes Trismegistus, having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world.

14. That which I have said of the operation of the Sun is accomplished & ended.

Take a moment to reflect on the tablet, and view the provided visual #1 http://www.esotericonline.net/group/alchemy/page/alchemy-lesson-1-visuals

what kind of impressions do you get, what is the operation of the Sun?

excellent everyone, you will notice these aspects of the emerald tablet being discussed in various ways through-out these lessons, I recommend to regularly look again at the tablet as we go in teh coming weeks, and see what new impressions are recieved
Sean Kuykendall

it speaks of our relation to what to a higher power and how that higher power is in everything including us therefore we have glory of the whole world. and by giving back to the universe we give to that higher power so it's a rather symbiotic relationship.

that's what i'm getting from it anyway
Green Moon

I do want to add quickly that re-addressing material is key, I feel
Eleftheria

what I read is that it is all equal
Me

The principles we are about to discuss, are a melding of past films I have done on the subject, and some new material from what will be in the coming Mystery School
finwake

The Sun and the Moon are the beginning of the separation of the one into the many. First there is one, then two: male and female aspect of the all. So then spring forth the many (the "it" in the tablet) which are also the one.
6:13 PM
Me

so some of the material being covered today may be familar, and some will contain additions that will be eventually a concurrent lesson

In Alchemy, we have a very sacred science for bringing the lead of an undeveloped consciousness, up to the level of a fully developed consciousness of Gold, magnificent and incorruptible. In this one can see past the allegory of symbols and cryptic artwork, commonly associated with Alchemy.

The Great Work is filled with some of the most spectacular symbolism ever created and seen in our time, deciphering them and applying them to ourselves displays one of the greatest secret’s ever to be revealed.
Blaze

I like the Great Work...need more study
Me

The list of alchemists is thought to originate with, Thoth, who is widely credited with being the author of science, religion, mathematics, geometry, philosophy, medicine, and magic.

Now, keep in mind as we move forward, that Thoth or Hermes doesnt necessarily pertain to a person, but rather an aspect

. Thoth is said to bring to civilization, the calculations for the establishment of the heavens, stars, Earth, and everything in them.

In other words, matter.

Compare this to how his feminine counterpart, Maatt was the force which maintained the Universe, otherwise, spirit. The unification of matter and spirit became a centerpiece in alchemical thought.

As the teachings spread, Thoth became known in other cultures as the Greek god Hermes, the two formally became the same as Hermes Trismegistus, of which he is currently known.

These teachings we later preserved by the Arab Alchemists of the time, with mystical traditions such as the Sufi

who translated many of the early texts

Some time later, another well known alchemist was Paracelsus, who brought many great works to the practice of alchemy. Paracelsus was born December 17th, 1493 in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, in a small village known as Maria.

Studying medicine by the age of 16, he quickly received his doctorate from the University of Ferrara. Paracelsus then began to study Hermetic, Neoplatonic, and Pythagorean philosophies, as well as being an astute Astrologer.

In medicine, he was a pioneer in the use of chemicals and minerals to treat ailments of the human body.
6:20 PM
Me

Due to his works, many of the Alchemical works became available in Europe and helped give way to what was known as the era of Enlightenment

This is the time period when we also see some of the well known mystical societies come into the public awareness

a great deal of these groups, began to display the inner workings of spiritual alchemy within their orders

It gave way to a great deal of fantastic alchemical art, showing the vast system of inner transformation displayed in allegory and symbolism

as many in these mystical groups were not only mystics, but also well known artists, scientists, and revolutionaries of the time

Perhaps one of the most important symbols in Alchemy is that of the Philosophers Stone, while it may not be as well known, its significance cannot be taken lightly.

The symbol of the stone can be used as a key, in order to aid in the decrypting of alchemical imagery and lend meaning to many other symbols. The Stone itself, in many ways, is indeed a key.

The symbol is used in the community logo, and I have a gallery of some artwork showing its geometry

http://www.esotericonline.net/photo/albums/the-stone

What exactly is the meaning of this symbol? The generally accepted explanation seems to be that of describing the relationship between the physical and spiritual realms, and our part of that relationship.

In the Stone we can be seen as a Divine being encased in matter, with the intent of performing work on the physical plane.

This work is nothing short of being able to exist beyond the material world, a consciousness perfected as a stone, by doing the work needed to achieve it, the Great Work.
6:27 PM
Me

This symbol as mentioned above, can be used as a key in a wide variety of alchemical imagery, it contains the law of the triangle, which we will go into further soon

The alchemist’s journey is known as the great work, and is broken down into several chemical, Psychological, Physiological, societal, and planetary levels.

The great work is broken down into four major categories, these are:

Nigredo

The Great Work begins in the stage of what is known as Nigredo, or the blackness. With our consciousness as the Prima Materia, is where we find ourselves in the current condition as the lead of the Alchemical allegory.

. With spirit we can dissolve and place our Prima Materia into the athanor or furnace and begin the calcination process and eliminating energies which may be blocking growth.

Please observe image #2 in the lesson visuals http://www.esotericonline.net/group/alchemy/page/alchemy-lesson-1-visuals

Nigredo can be a very powerful stage, as it often signifies a point in one’s life where a spiritual evolution is necessary or eminent. It is unfortunate, however a knowing that the material plane cannot fulfill and a seeking of spiritual truth is an inevitable and required event.

Nigredo is our difficulties, those things which we must overcome

sometimes, it can be a very nasty "place", and takes a great deal of courage
steve

it can last a long time

Great, now coming outright, there is some disagreement as to if this next Stage is Albedo, or if the Cauda Pavonis occurs next

the reason for this, in my experience, is that it can vary from person to person
Eleftheria

:-*
Diana

:-*
Me

however for the purposes of this discussion - we will describe Cauda Pavonis stage here as following Nigredo

Out of the whiteness, clarity begins to occur, and the alchemist can experience all the aspects of the whiteness as one because unity is found.
Eleftheria

:D
Me

Literally beginning as a small white dot, getting larger

As Isaac Newton showed us with a prism work, that whiteness enters from above, and can be broken down seen in all of its brilliance display of colors. We, as divine beings, are the prism.

This may be a euphoric experience for the alchemist, as new energies and knowledge not previously experienced come into play. When the peacock’s tail emerges and discipline is established, it signifies the alchemist is entering the next stage, known as Albedo.
6:42 PM
Ommi

:-)
Me

In my opinion we can see this stage portrayed in other cultures as well, such as the thousand petaled lotus of teh crown chakra opening, which its vast array of colors experienced

as well as the native american head dresses that a chief would wear, signifying the experience has been undergone

When the peacock’s tail emerges and discipline is established, it signifies the alchemist is entering the next stage, known as Albedo.

Please see image #3 http://www.esotericonline.net/group/alchemy/page/alchemy-lesson-1-visuals

sorry. 3 and 4 need to be swapped
Skywriter

Phew!
Me

To experience and understand the following stage known as Albedo, one generally must have been fully immersed in Nigredo, having looked deep within themselves

The source of all existence appears through the void, and is seen as a “whiteness” or bright light.

This occurs due to the understanding of unity in all polarities, as is seen in “The One”. In this, the Alchemist knows of the source, from which everything sprang, and is aware that the real beauty of the spiritual path is becoming this unification once again.
Tantrice

death
steve

yeah you drop one and gain another
Me

As shown the the Image, the pure white lady (virgin), although the dragon or serpent becons her, she is unaffected because the dragon has been tamed

it is there, but she can go about her work in balance and purity, free from enslavement of the dragon, which has been subdued

This is the ego, and one area that Alchemy differs, is that it is well know the Ego is NOT something to be destroyed, but to be tamed, subdued, and integrated

as with Nigredo, Albedo can also take a great deal of time, sometime falling back to Nigredo, which is perfectly OK BTW, and can be needed to clear any remaining impurities
ॐBlessedॐ

for me it is the purity and devine in the inner core of each heart; that is that virgin, that purity the ego needs to listen to; it is heaven

The final stage in alchemy is known as Rubedo, now take in to account that these are the Alchemical stages, and the 7 processes will be discussed in the following lessons

wow blaze, telepathic are we?
Blaze

yeah
Eleftheria

lol
Me

:)

As Albedo continues, Spirit begins to coagulate with matter and the volatile is becoming fixed. This is done when our conscious mind peers deep into the subconscious, and bring it back into the conscious mind to be observed.
Al Clayton

sweet
Me

This coincides with the process known as coagulation
Green Moon

solve et coagula
Me

see these stages are experienced during the processes
steve

awweesome
Sean Kuykendall

is it possible to lose the ability to lucid dream during coagulation?
Al Clayton

meditation=coagulation
Me

and can be used like a roadmap, similarly to the sephirot in Qabala
patrick

tris how does one move from one stage to another
Blaze

good question patrick
Me

one moves through these stages, its a natural progression
patrick

another word what are the tools or skill to use
steve

the crown, the finished product
Me

the difference in the Alchemist, from the the non, is that they will the processes to the natural stages occur more rapidly, working along with nature and creation, for our evolution of consciousness

In Albedo, Spirit is entering the soul, purifying and coagulating to become solidified and constant in our lives. This is when we begin to actually work with spirit and put action to it on the material plane, culminating in the formation of the diamond body.
Al Clayton

understanding the elements with out and with in?
Me

This diamond body, is the Light Body spoke of in various traditions

it is the Philosophers Stone
Blaze

It is a use of all the tools available to us...to alchemically change...
Me

the culmination of The Great Work, is the finalization of Rubedo, one the volatile hase become fixed
finwake

Tris, I agree on our conscious mind peering deep -- to some extent, but would suggest that the retrieval of unconscious content is not a conscious operation. Unconscious content manifests on its own accord and it is through the Great Work that the conscious and unconscious reunite.
6:59 PM
Me

i know this is an old discussion, -still edifiying- the 14 lines in the beginning--

are these translations of the emerald tablet as seen in the pic?

Comment by Abdullah Ahmed on May 26, 2014 at 12:03pm

Does one see the progression of the phases of the great work in the outside world? Could the principle of as above so below be equal with as without so within? If so then one should be able to observe the changes in his environment (without) that occur as symbols for the change in his consciousness (within). The symbols of the black crow, the white dove, the peacock's tail and all the rest of them should reveal themselves to you in your environment as a symbol for the change occurring within. In my opinion this is the magic of the world, when transmutations occur inside the outside world changes with it. Does anyone else see the symbolism in the outside world? Please any comments on this would be appreciated
