'Snegurochka' is a very popular character from many myths across Russia. In one story, a childless couple make a girl out of snow and she comes to life. She is very beautiful and the happy couple call her 'Snegurochka'. She grows up quickly and makes friends with girls from the nearby village. One day the girls invite her for a walk in the woods and here they make a small fire. Dancing around the flames the girls take turns leaping over the blaze, however when Snegurochka's turn comes she starts to jump but only gets halfway before evaporating into a small cloud of steam. In some regions of Russia the story happens on 'St Johns Day' and it is still the traditional practice on this day for young girls to jump over a small fire in memory of the poor 'Snegurochka'.
