In a way we can call William Winsor an alchemist. He developed a lot of innovations to art materials in a time there was none. He created watercolors cakes as we know today: all he did was discover the moisturizing effects of glycerin (so simple when we recognize it). To some kind of colors he had to reduce zinc pigments to ashes and then mixing this to other pigments.
