This year, in June, Bonham's London auctioned a famous, lost painting which had surfaced after many years from a private Rosicrucian collection in America.
It was painted by the mystic genius Nicholas Roerich, and it sold for a whopping $12.1 million, the highest price ever paid for a Nicholas Roerich painting...and the highest auction sale price for any Russian painting...ever.
It is called "Madonna Laboris" and depicts one of the apocryphal gospels, in which St. Peter draws God to the high walls of heaven, to reveal Mary dropping a luminous thread over the edge to the souls outside, in order to sneak them in. Peter asks God what is to be done. God says to Peter: "Let it be."
Divine compassion, mercy, tenderness...Roerich shows us the ineffable, veiled in quiet, strange beauty.
More on the Roerichs, soon.
