There you have it, there is big difference between natural and synthetic.
Synthetic is always worse than chemical or natural.

Drugs have their own personalities and just like people can hurt or help you, I disagree with the use of most synthetic drugs but drugs have been used by shamans for thousands of years. Entheogens can teach you great truths.

Hi there
My first question would be: which drugs and alcohol?
My 2nd question would be: what spiritual connection?
Anything can be a drug, even your connection with the source of all.

Gray, William - Magical Ritual Methods has a big section about drugs.
Robert Kane - A Contemporary Introduction to Free Will ..... also
Timothy L. S. Sprigge - The God of Metaphysics .... also
Drugs sure helped the native indians in america in their spiritual processes

Or ..... do not read but experience, and see what drugs does or doesn't do for you.

Indeed Sylvia, many of these substances are there for introspection, and in the "rat-race" of today's society, it is very easy to look past their benefits. Some substances have great effect of knocking the ego down a few notches, where it can more easily be controlled.

Really in my opinion, it mainly comes down to intent. If you are merely looking for a high, chances are that is all you will get. However, if you go into an experience wanting a deeper understanding of your spiritual nature, chances are that is all you will get as well.

For example, a Shaman certainly isn't looking for an escape when he selflessly alters his own consciousness for the healing of an individual or his community.

Not to mention, most of the people who are against the altering of ones consciousness, have never done so themselves. And even if a person has and used them for the purposes of escape instead of their intended purpose, they are generally in no position to say that has not brought another individual closer to the Creator. The experiences can be VERY personal.

I do not see alcohol in this way however, but then again, it is an un-natural creation of man, and I am therefore not surprised in it's negative effects.

Sylvia, for some users maybe although it has nothing to do with the substance, for others it puts them in a mind state to feel a greater connection to the creator or the much needed ability to perceive in a different way, free of pre-conceived notion. No natural creation is a mistake, and has its purpose here on earth. The yearning for altered states of consciousness has always been here, and always will be, because it has great benefit as well. Maybe you should look at the very in-depth Johns Hopkins studies proving that the use of psilocybin mushrooms produced highly mystical and spiritual experiences of most volunteers, that continue to last in a positive manner well after the experiment.

Television, food, and heartless sexual activity to name just a few can also replace God in ones life (and are used in much more abundance in society), there are many forms of escape, yet people seem to rarely mention the others due to their social acceptability. Addressing the true root purpose for escape is the only way, or the user of food, television, or "mind altering substances" will ALWAYS be replaced with something different.

Golden stairs into divine life by H.P.B
A clean life, an open mind,
A pure heart, an eager intellect,
An unveiled spiritual perception,
A brotherliness for all,
A readiness to give and receive advice and instruction,
A loyal sense of duty to the Teacher,
A willing obedience to the behests of TRUTH,
Once we have placed our confidence in,
And believe that Teacher to be in possession of it;
A courageous endurance of personal injustice,
A brave declaration of principles,
A valiant defence of those who are unjustly attacked,
And a constant eye to the ideal of human progression
And perfection which the secret science depicts-
These are the golden stairs
Up the steps of which the learner may climb
To the Temple of Divine Wisdom
